James Krenov’s delicate, lyrical cabinets have inspired a generation of wood aritsans, as has his impassioned insistence that one do their very best work, no matter what. Krenov invites the reader into his workshop, where he shares his techniques and an uncompromising approach to craftsmanship, and thoughts about his own work and its place in the world. Photo sequences show how Krenov composes a cabinet directly in the wood. He also discusses working with shop-sawn veneers, technique for fitting curved doors, and problems of accuracy and mistakes, concluding with detailed explorations of three furniture projects: a curved showcase cabinet, a writing table with drawer, and a chess table.

A Cabinetmaker’s Notebook by James Krenov

We’ve added a few books to the Hock Tools website that should be in every woodworker’s library. I’ll post about them in the coming days and weeks, in no particular order. This one gets to be first:

James Krenov remains one of the most influential cabinetmakers of modern times. His iconic cabinet-on-a-stand is only one facet of a long career in philosophizing, teaching and writing about the craft of fine woodworking. A Cabinetmaker’s Notebook is instructive for woodworkers as Krenov nurtures efficient habits and offers thoughtful approaches to materials and tools. More important, though is at the core of these pages: Krenov’s meditation on the deeper meaning of one person working at a demanding craft and the joy that brings.

Sharp Skate 4

Sharp Skate 4

Harrelson “Hap” Stanley of GetSharper has made some serious improvements to his Sharp Skate honing guide. The Sharp Skate makes side-sharpening plane irons and chisels a cinch. The cylindrical body houses a clamp that can accommodate blades up to 2-5/8″ wide. The clamp can pivot and lock for skew-edge angles to 30 25 and 20 degrees.

Along the bottom of the cylinder are nine skate wheels that allow the Sharp Skate to glide side-to-side along the abrasive surface. The distance from the wheels to the edge is very short to allow more effectively use of the whole stone surface, reducing the central wear so often caused by other honing guides thus minimizing the need to flatten your waterstones.

Wheels and bushingsThe wheels are hardened stainless steel “tires” that ride on hardened bushings packed with waterproof grease. This wheel-bushing configuration is one of the major improvements in this model, improving “rollability” for smooth, quiet action.

The Sharp Skate 4 has an accompanying angle-setting guide called the angle-dock. With this accessory you can set the angle of any thickness of blade by registering the angle-dock reference grooves on the heel of the bevel. This takes a little practice but works quite well.

Mr. Stanley has outdone himself with the new and improved Sharp Skate 4. This is a well thought-out, precision engineered and beautifully executed side-sharpening honing guide. Nice work, Hap!

Here’s a video of Hap showing us how it’s done.

Bazinga Bubinga

Bazinga!
Bazinga!

So long, Bubinga — we were just getting to know ya’. Here it is January 2017 and you’ve been added to the CITES list (appendix II) of  “species that are not necessarily now threatened with extinction but that may become so unless trade is closely controlled.”

Oh, we can still ship you to our customers within the United States — until we’ve exhausted our inventory of plane kits and carving knife handles. But no more import or export. Here at Hock Tools we’ve been employing your good looks, toughness and durability for years. You’ll be missed, and fondly remembered. Now we’ll have to find… another*.

So, Bubinga lovers of America, the party’s over. Cherish what you have and can still get domestically. Bubinga has left the building.

*Yes, Jatoba, that’s you we’re winking at:
