A Cabinetmaker’s Notebook by James Krenov

We’ve added a few books to the Hock Tools website that should be in every woodworker’s library. I’ll post about them in the coming days and weeks, in no particular order. This one gets to be first:

James Krenov remains one of the most influential cabinetmakers of modern times. His iconic cabinet-on-a-stand is only one facet of a long career in philosophizing, teaching and writing about the craft of fine woodworking. A Cabinetmaker’s Notebook is instructive for woodworkers as Krenov nurtures efficient habits and offers thoughtful approaches to materials and tools. More important, though is at the core of these pages: Krenov’s meditation on the deeper meaning of one person working at a demanding craft and the joy that brings.

Author: Ron Hock

  1. A standout choice for your first recommendation Ron. My actions speak louder than anything else I can say about Krenov’s first book: I’ve read it three times, no kidding. And each time, it reminds me of what I love about fine woodworking.

  2. You can have all the skills, tools, and wood in the world but they mean little without a clear state of mind that compels you to make fine things from wood. There is no better book to help you develop that mentality than A Cabinetmaker’s Notebook.
